4 child friendly activities to play on a road-trip any day
Road trips can be fun if you’ve given enough thought to how you’re going to keep your children happy for the duration. You’ll need to brace yourself for the question we all dread “are we nearly there yet” over and over unless your children are totally absorbed in what they’re doing.
Whilst it’s nice to have some interaction over the course of the journey, it’s unlikely you’ll want to be continually supervising play so you’ll need to put some thought into what is suitable for their ages and stages. Here are our top 3 child friendly activities to play on a road-trip any day.
1. Charge up the tablets
I know we don’t want our children to grow up glued to their tablets but there is a time when they really come into their own. One way we can all feel a bit better about this is by encouraging our children to play educational games. One of our favourite new webpage of games is Culinary Schools website, all the games have an educational aspect. My 4 year old has been enjoying playing Fruit Memory Game which is a classic style timed memory flashcard game with pictures of various fruits on the cards. She’s not great at progressing past the first few levels but she enjoys it and it’s great for her memory.
My 9 year old seems to have enough patience to have mastered Scooby Doo and Guess Who Midnight Munchies. The aim of the game is to feed Scooby Snacks at Scooby Doo. The tricky part is aiming at him and getting the right shot strength and angle.
2.Pack their favourites…
Children are renowned for being creatures of comfort and have some familiar toys and sentimental things from home will no doubt make them feel more settled. My daughter adores her Jellycat UK collection and always takes a few of them with her. She uses them to comfort her while sleeping but also to play with when she’s awake. If her brothers take their cuddly toys with them, then sometimes they all play with them together! At least for a little while…
3. Get arty
There are various ways to encourage the children to work on their colouring skills in the car. It’s not easy to create a masterpiece but with these top tips you can. My children love the magic colouring pads which just use water pens to reveal the picture. For older children you can buy felt art pictures. The felt acts as a buffer against the colouring pens making them ideal for using in the car.
4. Silly soup
This game goes on and on but the children love it. Silly soup was something my daughter learnt in Reception at school. You need to take a letter of the alphabet and each of you take it in turns to think of an object to put into a make-believe ‘pot’.
I hope you liked this post. I’m sure there are plenty of other activities to keep the kids occupied on a road trip too, so if you have any you think should be mentioned, please do get in touch.
Also try to remember that the fun can be in the journey and not ‘just’ the destination. It ca be easy to get stressed out when travelling with kids but there is really no need to. Pack plenty of snacks too and when the kids get a bit crabby, no doubt you will be able to keep them quiet for a little while by feeding them. Note – this can work for husbands too!
