A woman’s battle against abuse in Peru highlighted in documentary
A documentary called ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ highlights the battle against abuse in Peru.
Maxi Manuttupa is a single-mother living in Cusco, Peru. Follow her in this heartfelt documentary as she embarks on a journey to her ancestral home.
On her journey, Maxi confronts the previously untold horrors of the past which she tragically experienced during years of abuse from her husband.
She thankfully made a very brave decision to leave him. Maxi took her daughter with her and began working as a maid in the city. Times were really hard there too and she found it impossible to make ends meet due to low pay. This was all despite working as many hours as possible.
Determined as ever, Maxi often thought of way to get out of her difficult and frustrating situation and eventually decided to embark on a job that you may have heard of but that is very much traditionally held by men. The role was working as a porter carrying bags for tourists on the incredible Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Be enthralled as Maxi returns to her roots on her journey to overcome devastating abuse in this fascinating documentary, Dead Woman’s Pass. Directed by Lali Houghton and produced by Poh Si Teng, I have to say watching it really opened my eyes.
Mazi’s journey is made even more poignant in recent times since more than 900 girls and women have been reported missing in Peru since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
Dead Woman’s Pass qualified for the 2021 BAFTA and has won Best Documentary Short at the London International Documentary Film Festival. The documentary also received more accolades including a Special Jury Mention at the Palm Springs International ShortFest.
