13 ways to add some creativity into your life
Are you hoping to add some creativity into your life?
I am always on the lookout for adding a bit more creativity into my daily life. Being creative always lifts my mood and is a great outlet for me when I have been working hard or am just feeling a bit ‘bleugh’! Maybe you feel the same way too? I have come up with some simple ways to add a bit more creativity into my life which I explain in more detail here:
Bake and design your own cupcakes
I recently bought a piping set for icing my cupcakes and was amazed at how much you can flex your creative muscles when doing this. The set came with 7 different nozzles and I had to concentrate quite hard to get the overall look I wanted. We have used all sorts of toppings too, from mini marshmallows and biscuits to cute little flags and more.
Scrapbooking
Ooh how I love creating a scrapbook. I usually do this each summer, using polaroid pics from some of our favourite days out. I then stick them into a scrapbook, create some cute captions and voila – a fantastic memory and a great way to get creative!
Social Media
People use social media for all sorts of reasons. Pinterest and Instagram are great options if you are all about the visual. If you have a particular interest, you could create an account just for that, and upload gorgeous pictures. It could just be for your own fun and a beautiful account to scroll though, or it may even lead to more if you want it to. Some people buy TikTok followers to get a head start or others spend a long time engaging on social media to build up the numbers.
Go for a walk
There is nothing quite like being in nature to get your creative sparks flying! Ideally alone, with just the birds, I come up with lots of my creative blogging ideas when I take a walk in the great outdoors. I personally like going early in the morning just as the world is beginning to wake. Find a time that works for you and if you love it as much as I do, ensure that you get to do it at least a few times a week.
Handmade Gifts
With Christmas being just a few months away now, giving handmade gifts could be a nice option this year? Design Bundles have some super svg files with graphics that can be scaled to lots of different sizes. I’m thinking of designing my own tote bags and giving them as gifts (shhh don’t tell anyone!) as you can never have too many. They are a great way of reducing the use of plastic bags too and are an effective way of getting creative at the same time too. I also plan to design my own Christmas cards this year using the svg files too. I may just send them digitally to save on the environment…
Imaginative play
Become a child again! If you have young children, get involved in their games. Play hide and seek, do some artwork with them, get dressed up in fancy dress. Put the phone down and see what happens when you release your inner child. Whether you are out at a local attraction or at home, give it a try. I probably don’t do it often enough but do make an attempt to do it as much as I can.
Adult Colouring Books
This is something I discovered during lockdown. I bought myself a lovely set of sharpie pens, an adults colouring book with positive quotes and just started colouring! I don’t get to do it often – usually when the kids are colouring too – but it’s something that really relaxes me and gets the creative juices flowing.
Listen to music
Light a scented candle, lie back and put on some chilled music or put on something energetic, turn the volume up and dance around the room like a crazy cat. Whatever way you choose to do it, I can guarantee listening to music will get you in a more creative mood.
Embrace boredom
Sometimes you need to just let yourself get really really bored! Empty your mind. Get rid of those millions of thoughts going around your head and let yourself get mind-numbingly bored and I promise you will then start to feel more creative. Just give it time. We are on the go all the time in today’s world and sometimes just slowing things down and letting boredom seep through can actually be really helpful.
Watch something different
Do you tend to watch the same sort of things on tv? Broaden your horizons. Watch something you would normally never watch. It could be a nature documentary, a travel programme or something that doesn’t normally float your boat. You could be surprised and discover more than you bargained for. Open up your mind to new opportunities and creativity.
Surround yourself with beauty
As well as surrounding yourself in beautiful nature (see the point about going for a walk), make sure you surround yourself by things you love at home. It’s the small things like fairy lights, colourful rugs or pompom garlands that can really make me feel like I am actually okay at this creative stuff. I may be terrible at drawing but maybe I have an eye for design? I’m never going to be an interior designer but I do like to surround myself with things I love and put my own creative stamp on my home.
Vision boards
Ahhh vision boarding, where have you been all my life? I love nothing more than to rip out aspirational images from magazines and create a vision board of how I would like my life to be in the future. It might be a big house with a swimming pool, going on a luxury cruise, being zen and practicing yoga every day or something completely difference. The choice is yours. Let your creativity go wild and see what you come up with…
Dress colourfully
For years I have dressed in mostly black, because I thought it made me look slimmer. Now I can’t stand the colour and try to keep away from dark and drab shades. Give me canary yellow any day! I really think colourful clothing can not only lift your mood but give you that feeling of being creative.
